Welcome to the Big Comic Book DataBase DC Comics Resource and Checklist. One of the first major comic book publishers, it traces it's roots to two companies, National Allied Publications and Detective Comics which merged in the 1930's to become National Comics, and, later National Periodical Publications. All-American Publications was brought into the company in 1945. DC Comics is credited with single-handedly creating the super-hero genre with Action Comics and Superman in 1938, DC Comics' golden age of heroes included Batman (first appearing in Detective Comics # 27), The Flash, Aquaman and many other comic mainstays.

After the general malaise that effected the industry as a whole, DC hit back hard in the 80's. In 1986, Watchmen, by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons took a fresh and disturbing look at the super hero genre and has since become one of the best-selling comics of all time and claimed by most as one of the best comic stories ever done. That same year, Frank Miller, Klaus Janson and Lynn Varley redesigned, redefined and reinvigorated the Batman in The Dark Knight Returns.

Into the new century, DC continues to rely heavily on characters from the Golden Age of Comics, reworked for a new, video age. With parent company Warner Bros., classic DC characters are now served up to a new generation as The Batman, Justice League Unlimited and Teen Titans; these shows art ans stories are reflected in the pages of new books.
