First appearance of Dr. Doom.
In the later more elaborated origin stories from Fantastic Four Annual #2 and Fantastic Four #278, it will be revealed that Doctor Doom’s only real dependence upon the mask, is merely an issue of vanity. Many a mirror will pay the ultimate price, for showing him his own repugnant image. The mask itself added to his disfigurement, as it was applied to his face by the Tibetan monks who served him, red-hot, straight from the kiln, at his own insistence. So, in addition to the original disfigurement, there is an inverted brand of the mask, etched into his face.
