Synopsis

The last of the late Baron Heinrich Zemo's remaining mercenaries, Erik Josten, limps his way to the abandoned fortress of the now defunct original Masters Of Evil. He has ambitions to recreate the power of Wonder Man in himself, but he can't operate the machines. The Enchantress appears, and lends him a hand.

Together they incorporate a plan to publicly disgrace and discredit the Avengers. A monster that really isn't there causes the Avengers to wreck an entire city block, for no apparent reason. Another elaborate deception causes the Avengers to wreck a subway train. Power Man thwarts some spies dressed like security guards, and the Avengers, manipulated into drawing the wrong conclusions, fight Power Man, and come out looking like menaces, while Power Man is made out to be a hero.

The Avengers suspect they were being set up, so they each go, individually, to Power Man's lair, to confront him. Power Man calls the police, and has the Avengers arrested, for trespassing. The City Council decrees that the Avengers disband.

Issue Notes

To be continued. Origin of the original Power Man, later to be known as the evil Goliath. With the combined powers of Wonder Man and Giant-Man, Goliath III can reach a max (optimal) height of 200 ft. (Much bigger than Henry Pym ever was.) He can knock skyscrapers out of his way, and can withstand missile-fire. (At not such an optimal size, Goliath III will grow immeasurably immense, in Avengers #382.)
